Let me get this straight. Manny Ramirez, formerly of the Boston Red Sox and currently of the LA Dodgers, is out 50 games for taking HCG? Cheating and dishonesty aside, I would like to inform any other male athletes considering getting this drug "from their doctor" as part of a doping regimen of a few reasons this may not be a good idea:
1. HCG is the hormone of pregnancy. It is what home pregnancy tests look for in your pee. It is also prescribed synthetically for the "final maturation of follicles" before an IVF egg retrieval or IUI. So unless you're the pregnant man, I am guessing it is probably not something you want coursing through your veins.
2. HCG does a lot of things. It gets you mature follicles. It doubles every 48 hours when you're pregnant. But "restoring balance" is not something that comes to mind for me when I think about HCG. Unless balance includes violent moodswings and unrelenting nausea and fatigue in your world. But I think nonstop crying is generally frowned upon in the dugout.
3. See #1. If Manny had taken a HPT during this time period, he would have gotten two pink lines. There are so many things wrong with this, I don't even know where to begin.
Seriously guys. If you're going to do this stuff – which is weak and phony and makes you no hero at all – can you please stick to real steroids? Stay off our turf.

Searching for a Few Good Eggs
You want a baby. You're not any of the following: drug addict, teenager, criminal, deadbeat. It should be easy, right? Instead, you find yourself in an all-consuming hunt for a few good eggs (or sperm). Take some comfort here with familiar-sounding rants, sympathy and some bitter humor.
The Search
2/2/10 – Egg hatched. I am a mom.
11/09 – Put on bed rest at 28 weeks for suspected placental abruption.
8/09 – It's a boy!
5/09 – IVF #2: BFP!
3/09 – Operative hysteroscopy – third surgical procedure for one failed pregnancy.
2/09 – Office hysteroscopy reveals uterine scarring (Asherman's) from D&E. Yes, I am that one person in 100.
12/08 – US #2 (7w3d) - no hb. Try miso*prostol to avoid D&E. Decide this is ill-advised during D&E for incomplete m/c.
11/08 – IVF #1 – 18 eggs, 9 fert., 2 transferred. BFP! Betas doubling, US #1 (5w) - gestational sac, yolk sac.
9/08 – IUI #3 (2-3 gorgeous follicles). BFN. Time to move on.
8/08 - Begin new protocol: long (~3 wks.), low-dose stim.
7/08 - First consult with new (brilliant) RE.
6/08 - Cyst gone; start stims. Cycle nearly scrapped; trigger one sad-looking follicle - IUI #2. BFN.
4/08 - IUI #1 (lower dose, still "risky" 5 follicles). AF arrives. Benched for next month - residual follicular cyst.
2/08 - Injectable cycle #1 - cancelled (hyperstimulation - ~25 follicles = litter).
1/08 - Clomid 100 mg - cancelled (poor response/thin lining). I have to inject myself now??
12/07-1/08 - Clomid 100 mg. Ovulate, possibly 1st ever. Try au natural. AF arrives, laughing.
11/07 - Clomid 50 mg. Big fat nothing.

Doping is just dumb. I guess they do it to prevent 'testicular atrophy'... if something causes testicular atrophy, then you probably shouldn't be doing it. They also use HCG to get little boys testicles to drop... Now, a little boy getting 2 pink lines is REALLY disturbing.
Speaking of 2 pink lines, I hope your transfer goes great and you get some yourself in about a week or so. That would be so AWESOME.

I know it's a bit late for this post, but it absolutely made me crack up. Totally crazy, I thought the same thing!! Who knew that this could be attibuted to Vagina Envy.
